ABOUT TRANS TECHNOLOGIES

Trans Technologies examines the growing world of technologies that address the unique needs and challenges faced by transgender people. Drawing from in-depth interviews with creators of over 100 trans technologies—including apps, games, health resources, virtual reality systems, and more—the book explores the power and limits of this exploding technological movement and emphasizes the crucial role of community in driving social change. Haimson surveys the landscape of trans technologies to reveal the design processes that brought these technologies to life, and to show how trans people often must rely on community, technology, and the combination of the two to meet their basic needs and challenges.

ABOUT OLIVER HAIMSON

Oliver L. Haimson is Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. He conducts social computing research focused on envisioning and designing trans technologies, social media content moderation and marginalized populations, and changing identities on social media during life transitions. Much of his research has focused on transgender identities and experiences online and with social technologies.
